While under the supervisor of the Wildlife Management Area (WMA) Wildlife Foreman, The Fish and Wildlife Technician II position within the Green River Region of the Wildlife Division is responsible for implementing the daily technical activities associated with the maintenance, management, and enhancement of Peabody WMA.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performs habitat management activities such as strip mowing and disking, preparing and planting food plots, and chemical applications to meet habitat management goals.
  • Operates vehicles, tractors, atv’s, and other equipment as necessary to complete these tasks.
  • Operates as a member of the Regional prescribed burn team, working on both public and private lands within the region.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs on vehicles, tractors, equipment, buildings, roads, and other property when required.
  • Utilizes tools, parts, and consumables. Use and understands Fleet Management policies for vehicle use, maintenance and repairs, and agency policies for purchases.
  • Maintains maintenance logs on vehicles and equipment as necessary.
  • Serves as crew leader in coordinating the daily activities of interim staff.
  • Monitors interim staff activities to ensure proper departmental policy and procedures are applied.
  • Attends training sessions and maintains certifications as directed, including CDL licensing, RX fire qualifications, and Pesticide Applicators certification.
  • Interacts professionally with members of the public during managed hunts and during daily work activities.
  • Has working knowledge of federal, state, and agency policies and procedures.
  • Collects and provides data for reports.
Preferred Skills and Abilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • A working knowledge of farm equipment is needed for this position.
  • Experience conducting wildlife management practices or similar.
  • Experience in the operation and maintenance of tractors, rotary cutters, pull-type disks, herbicide sprayers, ATV/UTVs, and other agriculture and construction equipment would be preferred.
  • Preferred candidates should be willing to complete various training sessions and certifications such as KY Pesticide applicator licensing, and KDFWR prescribed fire certifications.
  • Some computer skills will be required, general knowledge of computer programs such as, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Office.
  • Ability to multi-task various job tasks.

Minimum Requirements

EDUCATION: High school graduate.




EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have three years of fishery, wildlife or habitat management/development experience.




Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Additional related training will substitute for the required experience on a year for year basis.




Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: Experience in fisheries, wildlife or habitat management/development will substitute for the required education on a year for year basis.




SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must possess a valid driver's license prior to appointment in this classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s) or other credentials.

Travel, extreme weather conditions, heavy equipment and wildlife may pose hazards.

Probationary Period

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
