FIELD GEOLOGIST/HYDROGEOLOGIST POSITION

Western Water and Land, Inc . is currently interviewing for an entry to mid-level (1 to 5 years of experience) Geologist/Hydrogeologist to be located in Grand Junction, Colorado.

This position is offered as a seasonal/summer position up to a full-time position, depending on applicant preference.

Starting compensation will depend on experience and will range from $55K to $85K annually.

Western Water & Land, Inc. has a diverse clientele with management and technical services for a broad range of environmental projects - from small-scale site studies to management and implementation of large-scale environmental programs including water resource and land assessments, hydrogeologic characterizations, and restoration projects.

We have an immediate need for a field geologist/hydrogeologist to oversee and direct monitoring well drilling and construction in western Colorado. This work is projected to last 4 to 8 weeks. Upon completion of this project, other project work will be assigned.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate and direct drilling subcontractor on day to day drilling and monitoring well construction and will include: lithologic logging of drill cuttings or core; recording hydrogeologic observations on groundwater occurrence; identifying hydrostratigraphic units; directing drilling company on well design and proper construction methods, the use of proper materials and quantities, and strict containment of drilling fluids onsite; monitoring groundwater levels; assessing groundwater recovery; directing and recording data during well/borehole tests and well development; and other related tasks.
  • Assisting in groundwater sampling of monitoring wells
  • Installing geologic and hydrologic instrumentation
  • Preparing reports and associated ArcGIS (or ArcPro) maps, and proposals ranging from regulatory issues to technical descriptions and presentations of technical data including calculations and the contouring and plotting of data;
  • Organizing and interpreting water chemistry and other hydrogeologic data
  • Assisting with site reclamation activities;
  • Conducting surface water measurements and aquifer tests;
  • Assessing contamination of soil and water and the potential impacts to other media;
  • Assisting with environmental compliance and permitting under all federal, state, and local governmental regulations;
  • Performing hydrologic field analysis, reconnaissance, mapping, sampling of surface water, groundwater, soil, rock, waste rock, and other media; performing data base management including compilation and reduction of data and statistical analysis;

Job Requirements

The successful candidate will hold a Bachelor of Science and/or Master of Science degrees in Geology, Hydrogeology, Hydrology, Environmental Engineering or related field and 1 to 4+ years of experience within the industry; 40-hour OSHA training is preferred. Proficiency in Microsoft office products is required. Experience with other software such as and ESRI ArcGIS/ArcPro, AutoCad, Aqtesolve, MODFLOW, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS and other hydrologic-related modeling software is a plus.

Local travel and overtime will be necessary to support certain projects. Travel requirements may range between 1 to 7 days. The position requires solid technical writing and verbal communication skills, the ability to work with a team and independently on multiple diverse projects, the willingness to learn and a commitment to safety.
