KAWERAK POSITION DESCRIPTION
Recruitment Length: Two weeks, position closes Monday, June 1 st 2026
Temporary, 6 month assignment with no benefits

JOB TITLE: Grant Writer
LOCATION: Remote
POSITION STATUS: Temporary for 6 months, Regular Full-Time
EXEMPT STATUS: Non-Exempt
PAY SCALE GRADE: 15 ($46.76 – $54.20 DOE)
REPORTS TO: Vice President of Strategy and Policy
The Grant Writer will focus work on raising funds to support Kawerak’s mission and program priorities. The Grant Writer will focus on growing federal, state, foundation and corporate grant funding resources for the organization. The Grant Writer will identify, define and develop funding sources to support existing and planned program activities. The Grant Writer will be the responsible lead that develops, writes and submits the grant proposal to federal, state or private funding sources.
BRIEF SUMMARY OF JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborate with staff to research and identify new funding sources to meet division needs and priorities;
- Actively seek new grants that address Kawerak’s long range plans, preferring grants that are over $50,000 and allow full indirect rates;
- Develops high quality proposals, narratives, applications and supporting documents in response to grant/funding solicitations within the requirements of Kawerak’s policies and the funding agency’s requirements;
- Work with planning and accounting staff during grant development for proper review of narrative and budget and then follow company policy on submitting grant applications for internal review prior to deadline submission;
- Research and collect data and study findings to support grant proposals;
- Responsible for maintaining grant schedules and tracking grants. Assist Program Directors to renew grant applications timely within schedule, based on Kawerak’s routing process;
- Develop and foster relationships with funding resources. Serves as a liaison to funding agency and organizations for the division. May assist departments with requesting no-cost extensions or modification to the scope of work with the funding agency;
- Works with other Kawerak staff or partners to research, develop, write and submit letters of inquiry, concept papers and grant proposals. Contribute to strategy and planning meetings for such work;
- Coordinates and follows-up with funding agency on progress of submitted proposals as necessary;
- Remain up to date on issues, and priorities relative to grant proposals;
- Develops and maintains a master file on pending grants and contracts;
- Meets regularly with the Vice President and appropriate staff to discuss current and new funding needs and priorities;
- Becomes cognizant of funding regulations, grant or compliance requirements of the funding source;
- Keep the Vice President and appropriate staff informed on the progress of all grants and issues as they arise with each grant;
- May assist departments review grant report narratives, and as needed help submit reports to the funding agency;
- Inform staff of what is allowable regarding proposed expenditures as they related to specific grants and grant applications;
- The position is required to work after regular business hours and over weekends to ensure completion and submission of a grant application by deadline;
- Conduct grant writing workshops or provide technical assistance to other staff or community Development Coordinators/Grant Writers;
- Other duties as assigned by Vice President of Strategy and Policy.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to Kawerak’s missions is required. This may include, but not limited to: business, public administration, rural development, biology, education or social work. Two years of responsible work experience as a Grant Writer is required;
- Must have strong written communication skills, organizational and budgeting skills and able to type for long periods. Must have the ability to write clear, structured, articulate and persuasive proposals;
- Ability to work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds;
- Must be dependable, self-motivated and able to work with minimum supervision;
- General knowledge of the Bering Straits region and its unique needs is prefered;
- Must be able to manage multiple tasks and priorities. Must possess computer skills in Windows, Microsoft Word and Excel, e-mail and Internet usage;
- Must be able to work effectively under pressure and have strong attention to detail;
- If the position is remote, must be comfortable in being managed remotely, working with multiple stakeholders and collaborating remotely across departments and potentially divisions;
- Prefer federal and state grants management experience.
