Fire Control Worker III (2) Two Positions

Fire Management

Hourly Wage: $18.23/Temporary/Full-Time/Supervisory

 

The purpose of the position is to serve as a lead senior wildland firefighter, Squad boss or trainee, on an engine, helitack module, or hand crew. Duties will include: fire suppression activities, fire prevention, fire training, prescribed burning, search and rescue, tree planting, hazard fuels reduction, and aiding the Yakama Nation community in all emergency situations. The incumbent will also be involved with the maintenance and repair of firefighting tools, equipment, vehicles, and facilities. May at times be assigned to off reservation assignments up to 14 days. May at times be required to stay in the mountains overnight.

 

Examples of Work Performed:

Work is primarily performed outdoors in forest and desert environments in steep terrain where surfaces may be extremely uneven, rocky, or covered by vegetation. ​ Temperatures commonly exceed 100°F and fall below freezing. ​ Risks include smoke inhalation, fire entrapment, snake and insect bites and stings, falling, rolling, burning material, and exposure to excessive machinery noises. ​ Must be able to adjust and cope with weather elements, dust, smoke, poor bivouac, and eating conditions under unpredictable circumstances. ​ May be required to live in backcountry camps for extended periods. ​ ​ May require travel by light fixed wing or rotor aircraft. ​

May serve as an Engine Operator, Squad Boss, Squad Boss (T), helitack crewmember, hand crew crewmember, heavy equipment boss, Sawyer or swamper upon receiving qualifications. Incumbent is expected to help develop subordinates throughout the season.

Performs basic fire line activities such as line construction, hose layout, operation of pumps and accessories. Lopping and scattering of fuels using hand tools, holding, patrolling, monitoring, and mop up operations. Moves dirt, chops brush, small trees, etc. to construct fire line. Responsible for observing the rules of firefighting safety and applies practices and techniques to minimize resource damage.

Participates in fire and safety training in the techniques, practices, and methods of fire suppression and in the safe, efficient operation and use of tools, equipment and vehicles used in fire line activities, with emphasis on those used in the particular function to which assigned. Must participate in crew proficiency checks, drills, safety sessions and fire critiques. Ensures own safety and welfare as well as that of others in all aspects of the assignments.

Ensures facilities are maintained and kept in working order, along with additional duties inside and outside the compounds.

Duties involve fieldwork requiring above average physical performance, endurance, and superior conditioning. Required to participate in daily physical training (PT).

Position is subject to adjusted work week and hours including Saturday, Sunday, and Holiday duty: also, will be subject to prolonged and often stressful work conditions following a regular 8-hour shift.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of fire behavior including causes of fire, influence of temperature, humidity, wind, topography, slope, and fuel moisture conditions.

Knowledge of fire management techniques, methods, terminology, and safety practices and procedures.

Knowledge of technical firefighting such as helicopters, dozer, fire engine and hand crew operations and the ability to successfully lead others while performing these duties.

Knowledge of policies and guidelines pertaining to safety such as national policies, agency policies and guidelines, Standard Firefighting Orders, Watch Out Situations, and other related fire safety guidelines.

Knowledge of basic first aid.

Knowledge of basic two-way radios and the use of GPS Units.

Skill in using hand tools and power tools such as Pulaski, shovel, McLeod, chainsaw, and portable pumps. ​

 

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to obtain necessary certifications in areas such as single resource, falling and water handling.

Ability to work outdoors under all types of weather conditions and to perform physical labor.

Ability to perform basic computer skills and access email.

 

Minimum Requirements:

Must be 18 years of age or older.

High School Diploma or GED is required.

Must be able to take and pass a wildland fire physical for arduous duty.

Must be able to take and pass the arduous level Work Capacity Test.

Must have passed basic fire training S-190, S-130, S-131, L-280, IC-700 and ICS-100.

Must be able to take and pass S-230 & S-290.

Must have passed S-212 power saws and S-211 basic pumps.

Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.

Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Tribal Driver Permit with Defensive Driving Course certificate (to be updated every 2 years).

Must wear required protective flame-retardant clothing: hard hat, gloves, firefighting leather boots, and other personal protective equipment.

Yakama enrolled preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.
