The registered nurse coordinates and performs a variety of nursing care procedures for patients of all ages. This role requires professional knowledge, consideration of specific patient conditions and treatments, and the ability to work independently in completing assignments. Guidelines include provider orders, standards of care, nursing policies and procedures manuals, and hospital policies. Nursing duties include support to individuals of all ages and their families. Clinical decisions are made independently during the scheduled shift. The nurse maintains complete accountability for all actions taken. Consultation with the appropriate manager or supervisor may be required in difficult situations. The nurse must react in a calm manner and make sound nursing judgments in emergent situations. Accountability for proper delegation and supervision of CNA/Tech is essential. Essential Functions and Accountabilities: Provide total nursing activities and supervise subordinates for all patients/residents during working hours, assuring their safety. Develop and maintain good working rapport with inter-departmental personnel as well as other departments to meet the needs of patients/residents. Assist in developing and maintaining nursing objectives and standards. Assist in developing, implementing, and coordinating department policies and procedures, care plans, and nursing procedure manuals. Interpret department policies and procedures to personnel, residents/patients, visitors, and family members as necessary. Ensure each patient's/resident's rights to fair and equitable treatment, self-determination, individuality, privacy, property, and civil rights are upheld. Assure established infection control procedures and isolation techniques are strictly followed. Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and positivity. Assist in training department personnel and make recommendations concerning training. Perform administrative requirements such as completing necessary forms and reports. Assist in evaluating and assisting care plans for medical, social, psychological, spiritual, restorative, and rehabilitative needs. Maintain confidentiality of all pertinent patient/resident care information. Evaluate emergencies and determine necessary emergency measures. Make independent decisions regarding nursing care. Complete required record-keeping forms on patient/resident admission, discharge, and transfer. Assure all nursing notes are informative and descriptive of the care provided. Notify physicians of accidents and complete incident report forms. Assure that stock levels of medications, medical supplies, and equipment are maintained. Report needs to management. Attend and participate in staff/department meetings, workshops, and seminars as approved. Give and receive nursing reports upon reporting in and ending shift work hours. Receive verbal orders from physicians and chart accurately on the physician's order sheet or electronic medical record. Transcribe physician's orders to electronic documentation systems and complete work requisitions for unsafe conditions or equipment repairs. Observe, record, and report to physicians on patient conditions and reactions to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents. Other duties may be assigned as necessary and appropriate. Physical Working Conditions: The nurse must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday. Coping with the mental and emotional stress of the position is essential. The nurse must possess sight and hearing senses or use prosthetics that enable these senses to function adequately. Independence, flexibility, personal integrity, and effectiveness when working with patients/residents, personnel, and support agencies are required. Good general health and emotional stability are necessary. The ability to relate to and work with ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile individuals is crucial. Lifting patients/residents, medical equipment, and supplies may be required. Education, Certifications, and Licenses Required: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (Bachelor's degree, Associate's degree, or Diploma in nursing).
